A Firefox update or security software update may resolve this problem. For example, Firefox may hang at startup or fail to load any content when Webroot SecureAnywhere is installed and enabled (this was fixed in Firefox version 97.0.1). Interactions between certain Internet security software (firewall or anti-virus) can cause Firefox startup hangs on some systems. Note: If you send performance data, Mozilla will gather data including hangs for your Firefox, which will help making Firefox better for future versions. To resolve hanging problems not specifically mentioned in this article, or if the suggested solutions do not solve the problem, see Troubleshoot and diagnose Firefox problems.

The downside to setting the to 20 minutes is that your browser session is saved only once every 20 minutes rather than once every 15 seconds. Setting the sessionstore interval to 1200000 milliseconds (20 minutes) resolved the memory consumption issue. I recall that Firefox started to become less responsive when any of its processes had consumed more than a gigabyte of RAM, and became very unresponsive after around two gigabytes of RAM was consumed by a Firefox process. Firefox will become less responsive as more memory is consumed. With the default value and while on some sites such as YouTube, the working set memory consumed by some of the running Firefox processes will slowly and steadily grow even if you pause the video you were watching. I recall that the default value is 15000 or 15 seconds.

I resolved this by setting to 1200000 which is equivalent to 20 minutes. Firefox used to perform sluggishly for me after watching YouTube videos for a while.
